Right Shoulder

According to Texas law an operator may drive on an improved shoulder to the right of the main traveled portion of a roadway if that operation is necessary and may be done safely, but only:

  • to stop, stand, or park;
  • to accelerate before entering the main traveled
    lane of traffic;
  • to decelerate before making a right turn;
  • to pass another vehicle that is slowing or stopped
  • on the main traveled portion of the highway, disabled, or preparing to make a left turn;
  • to allow another vehicle traveling faster to pass;
  • as permitted or required by an official
  • traffic-control device; or
  • to avoid a collision.

    Use of Right Shoulder

    As a driver, it is important to stay aware of the rules of the road and to follow them to ensure the safety of yourself and your passengers. One of the most important rules is to be aware of the right highway shoulder and use it appropriately.

    Right highway shoulders provide a safe area for drivers to pull over in case of an emergency. They are also used for emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and police cars, to pass other vehicles. Additionally, right highway shoulders are used by police officers to monitor traffic and enforce speed limits.

    When it comes to driving, drivers should be aware of the right highway shoulder and use it appropriately. When exiting a highway, drivers should use the right shoulder to slow down and merge into the next lane. This is important because it allows other drivers to pass safely and helps reduce the risk of an accident.

    It is also important for drivers to be aware of the right shoulder when passing other vehicles. Drivers should not pass another vehicle if the right shoulder is occupied by an emergency vehicle or a police officer. Doing so could result in a ticket or worse, an accident.

    Finally, drivers should be aware of the right highway shoulder and use it appropriately when parking. Parking on the right shoulder of a highway is usually prohibited and can result in a fine. Additionally, parking on the right shoulder can block the view of an oncoming vehicle, creating a hazardous situation.

    Overall, the right highway shoulder is an essential part of driving safely and responsibly. Drivers should be aware of the right shoulder and use it appropriately to ensure the safety of themselves and other drivers.
