How it works
Welcome to the Texas Defensive Driving FAQ. This page provides clear, simple answers to the most common questions about taking a state-approved defensive driving course in Texas. Whether you’re completing the course for ticket dismissal, an insurance discount, or personal improvement, this guide will help you understand the rules, requirements, and process from start to finish.
Is Comedy Safe Driver approved for Texas defensive driving?
Yes. Comedy Safe Driver is fully approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) to provide a Texas Defensive Driving course that meets all state requirements for ticket dismissal and insurance discounts.
How long is the Texas defensive driving course?
State law requires all Texas defensive driving courses to be exactly six hours in length. Our course meets this requirement and allows you to complete it at your own pace. You may log in and out anytime and finish the course over multiple sessions.
Can I use this course for ticket dismissal?
Yes—if your court approves you. The course is accepted by courts throughout Texas for eligible moving violations. However, you must request permission from your court before enrolling. For more details, see our Texas Ticket Dismissal page.
Can I take the course for an insurance discount?
Yes. Many insurance companies offer a discount to drivers who complete a state-approved defensive driving course. When you finish, you will receive an insurance certificate that you can submit to your insurer. Visit our Texas Insurance Discount page for more information.
What type of certificate will I receive?
You may receive one or two types of certificates depending on your needs:
- Court Certificate – for ticket dismissal
- Insurance Certificate – for insurance discounts
Both are included in your course completion when required.
How do I submit my certificate to the court?
We provide multiple delivery methods depending on your court’s requirements. Many courts support Texas defensive driving e-file, allowing us to submit your certificate electronically on your behalf. If your court does not accept e-file, you can choose instant download or physical mail.
Will I need a Texas driving record?
Most courts require a certified Texas Type 3A driving record in addition to your completion certificate. You can add a driving record during registration. Learn more on our Texas Driving Record page.
How long do I have to complete the course?
Your court will assign a deadline for completing the course and submitting your documents. We cannot change these deadlines. Make sure to finish the course and send your certificate before your due date.
Do I have to take a final exam?
Yes. Texas law requires a final exam at the end of the course. The exam is multiple choice and covers the topics from the course. You can retake it if needed.
Can I start the course now and finish later?
Absolutely. Our course is self-paced. You can start anytime, pause, and return when it’s convenient. Your progress is saved automatically.
What devices can I use?
You can take the course on any modern device, including:
- Computers
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Smartphones
The system remembers your progress across devices.
What if I need help?
If you need technical support or have questions about the course, our support team is here to help. For court-related questions (deadlines, eligibility, fees, extensions), contact your court directly.
