How it works
The Texas Type 3A Driving Record is the certified record most Texas courts require when you take a defensive driving course for ticket dismissal. This page explains what a Type 3A record includes, why courts request it, and how you can order it quickly through Comedy Safe Driver during registration.
What Is a Texas Type 3A Driving Record?
A Type 3A driving record is the official, certified version of your Texas driver history. It comes directly from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and includes:
- Your license status
- Your driving history
- Any accidents or violations recorded by DPS
- Any suspensions, revocations, or restrictions
This certified version is the only record accepted by Texas courts when dismissing a traffic citation through defensive driving.
Why Do Texas Courts Require a 3A Driving Record?
Most Texas courts require a Type 3A driving record to confirm that:
- You have not taken defensive driving recently for ticket dismissal
- Your license is valid
- You are eligible for the course under Texas state law
Your court will usually list this requirement on your paperwork or instructions. If you are unsure, contact your court directly. Comedy Safe Driver cannot determine your eligibility or change court requirements.
How to Get Your Texas Type 3A Driving Record
You have two options when taking our Texas Defensive Driving course:
Option 1: Add During Registration (Fastest)
When you register for the course, you can choose to add your Type 3A driving record. Our system will retrieve the record electronically so you can download it instantly and submit it to your court along with your completion certificate.
Option 2: Order Directly From Texas DPS
You may also request your record yourself through the Texas DPS website. However, the DPS process can be slower, and you may need to verify your identity or wait for email processing.
Is a Driving Record Required for Insurance Discounts?
No. When taking defensive driving for an insurance discount, insurance companies typically do not require a Type 3A record. Driving records are mainly required by courts for ticket dismissal.
What Happens After I Order My Record?
If you add the driving record during registration, your:
- Record will be retrieved by our system
- Data will be processed securely
- Certified PDF will be available inside your course dashboard
You can download or print it anytime. If you are also taking the course for ticket dismissal, you’ll submit both:
- Your completion certificate
- Your Type 3A driving record
Your court will then review the documents and process your dismissal.
How Long Is a Texas 3A Driving Record Valid?
Driving records do not expire, but most courts want them to be recent—usually dated within the last 90 days. Ordering through Comedy Safe Driver ensures your record is current and court-ready.
What If My Court Doesn’t Mention a Driving Record?
If your court paperwork does not mention a driving record, you may not need one. Every court has different requirements, so always check your dismissal order, instructions, or court website.
