Missouri driver license points are assessed for traffic convictions. Can a Missouri driving course keep new points off your license? For an eligible violation, court-authorized Driver Improvement Program participation can be accepted in place of point assessment. It is not a general promise to erase old points, dismiss a ticket, or restore a suspended license.
This guide explains the distinction so you can ask the right questions before enrolling. If the court has already authorized your course, see Comedy Safe Driver’s eight-hour online DIP, provider OL029, for $24.95.
Preventing new points is different from reducing existing points
Under Missouri’s DIP statute, an approved course may be used in lieu of points for qualifying violations when ordered and verified by the court. The relevant rules include a 36-month limit between such uses and completion within 60 days of conviction.
Existing points can also decrease through periods without new points. The Missouri Department of Revenue describes that as a separate process: after one qualifying year, the remaining points decrease by one-third; after two, by one-half; and after three, to zero. A conviction can remain on a driving record even when its points have fallen to zero.
How many points can a Missouri speeding ticket carry?
Missouri’s statutory schedule assigns three points to state-law speeding and two to speeding under a county or municipal ordinance. Check the actual charge and disposition with your court rather than assuming the point value from the location of the stop.
How to check your Missouri driver license points
The Department of Revenue says four points within 12 months triggers an advisory letter, while eight or more within 18 months triggers suspension. Review your own record and notices instead of relying on a remembered total.
If you already have a suspension or revocation notice, follow the requirements listed by DOR. Buying DIP does not itself restore driving privileges. Use the official tickets and points FAQs to find record and reinstatement resources.
Questions to ask before paying for a course
- Has the court authorized DIP for my specific case?
- What effect will completion have on this violation?
- What must I complete, and by which dates?
- Who receives the certificate, and how is completion reported?
For a fuller enrollment checklist, read Missouri DIP eligibility and court permission. Do not assume a certificate alone closes your case; retain confirmation that the required recipient received it.
Will DIP lower my insurance premium?
An insurance company decides whether it offers a course discount and whether you qualify. Avoiding a particular point assessment is not a promise that a premium will stay the same. Ask your insurer about its course-discount requirements separately.

Keep your record and court instructions together
When reviewing Missouri driver license points, keep your citation, court notices, and driving record in one place. Write down the court handling the case and the question you need answered. A general explanation of points cannot establish the status of your individual ticket. If a record entry is unclear, use the official DOR contact information linked above to ask about it. If your question concerns course permission, direct it to the court handling your case.
What to check before starting the online course
Once you have authorization, compare the course details with your instructions: the program name, approved provider, required duration, and completion deadline. Our Missouri course is eight hours and costs $24.95. Plan enough time to complete the lessons and handle your paperwork. Before you finish, confirm the spelling of your name and the case information you will need for the certificate. Keep a copy of the completed certificate and follow the submission instructions from your court. Completing the lessons and submitting the required paperwork are separate steps.
